Last month we filed a federal lawsuit on behalf of Jim Childs and his son, who was expelled from a Maine public school because of his religious objection to vaccinations. Maine’s legislature and Governor Janet Mills abolished the religious exemption in 2021.

Today (August 12, 2026), we filed an emergency motion for a temporary restraining order and a preliminary injunction, asking the court to step in and allow the child to attend school while this litigation unfolds.

You can read our motion in full here.

If the district court denies our motion for a preliminary injunction, we will proceed to appeal this to the First Circuit Court of Appeals and, if necessary, the United States Supreme Court. Time is of the essence, since the new school year for this child begins on August 27, 2026.

And we will not stop fighting until the religious exemption for school vaccinations is restored in Maine, and in every other state where it has been lost. We also have active litigation seeking to restore the religious exemption in Connecticut, New York, and California.

But none of this is possible without your support. Please consider making a gift today to support our ongoing legal efforts to win back religious liberty for each and every family in America!
